HARVEY CEDARS BEACHFILL – November 2009

What is being done and where?

  • The base contract includes the restoration and construction of a dune and berm from 86th Street south to Bergen Avenue .
  • Approximately 2 million cubic yards of sand will be placed onto the beach.
  • Dune grass will be planted along the entire dune except at the designated dune cross over access ways.
  • The contract also has five options for an additional 700,000 cubic yards of sand to be placed on the beach throughout the entire municipality and additional dune enhancement between Bergen Avenue and the southern municipal boundary.   The sand will be dredged from the approved borrow area approximately 2.5 miles offshore of Harvey Cedars using a Hopper Dredge and pumped onshore through large discharge pipes and ultimately placed on the beach to the design specifications.

How long will it take?

  • The Army Corps of Engineers issued the Notice to Proceed on September 23, 2009.  From this date, the contractor has 180 calendar days to complete all items of the project.  The majority of work will likely take place between November 2009 and March 2010.

Who is involved?

  • The US Army Corps of Engineers will manage all construction and is funding 65%.
  • The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is funding 26.25%.
  • The Borough of Harvey Cedars and Ocean County are funding 8.75%.
  • Weeks Marine, Inc. is the prime contractor for the Harvey Cedars Beachfill.

How much will it cost?

  • The contract for the project was awarded for $19.31 million, with the potential for additional options to be exercised up to $23.62 million.

HARVEY CEDARS – October 8, 2009 – BEACH REPLENISHMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN

The Harvey Cedars portion of the Long Beach Island Beachfill Project will begin construction in October.

Once started, work will be conducted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until project completion.

The contractor will be pumping sand from a set location in the ocean through a screen to a hopper dredge, then through a smaller diameter screen onto the beach via a 36-inch diameter pipeline.  The project will begin at the north end of Harvey Cedars and continue south.

Once on the beach, heavy equipment will move the sand to its proper position.  Throughout the project there will be areas of the beachfront occupied by construction vehicles, pipeline, and other necessary equipment.   It is anticipated that approximately 1,000 feet of beachfront will be closed to public access at any one time for safety reasons, as the beach is being built at a rate of 100 – 200 linear feet per day.

Representatives from the DEP, Army Corps of Engineers and the contractor will be available at our next regular Commissioner’s meeting on October 20th at 4:30pm to answer questions regarding this project.
