RESOLUTION #2006-090

 

PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

 

 

WHEREAS domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior that a person uses against a partner, former partner, or family member to control that person; and

 

WHEREAS one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; and

 

WHEREAS in 2004, there were 76,109 domestic violence offenses reported in New Jersey, and 1,200 women killed by partners nationally; and

 

WHEREAS everyone deserves to live a life free form the fear of being hurt or killed by people who are supposed to love them; and

 

WHEREAS the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC has declared domestic violence a Special State Project for its members, and the Long Beach Island Woman’s Club, Inc., as a member of the Federation joins with the clubs throughout the State of New Jersey to address the issue of domestic violence.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the governing body of the Borough of Harvey Cedars do hereby proclaim the month of October to be National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in our community, and do hereby join the dedicated volunteers of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC and the Long Beach Island Woman’s Club, Inc. to aid victims of domestic violence; to emphasize the need for awareness of domestic violence; to support our local domestic violence shelters; and to promote the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-SAFE.
